Our Fave Flavours at Messina

It’s the week before Mardi Gras, and my editor told me to research and write about the seven best flavours of ice cream at Gelato Messina.

I’m almost positive that this could be considered something akin to a hate crime somewhere in the world. But alas, I’m devoted to my work, so here are my favourite flavours. If I go home alone this weekend, it’s on you.

Salted Caramel and White Chocolate

If you’re someone who really resents going with the flow, you should probably drop the ‘tude for Messina’s best selling gelato. It’s a seriously beautiful salted-caramel gelato that strikes a perfect balance between savoury and sweet thanks to some crispy chunks of white chocolate.

Milk Chocolate with Choc Peanut Fudge

It’s peanut and chocolate on chocolate. It’s a double dose of everyone’s favourite thing, with a single dose of everyone’s second favourite thing (unless you’re allergic to peanuts).

And yes, it does actually taste like milk chocolate.

Salted Coconut with Mango

This dairy-free and vegan-friendly sorbet proves that everything can be improved by adding a bit of salt. I’m pretty much opposed to everything that has coconut in it, but this flavour was definitely a surprise to my jaded taste buds. The salted coconut is freshened up even more by a zesty mango salsa, which amps up the tropical vibes.

Nougat

If you’re a fan of nuts, then this flavour is sure to take you to your Shangri-la. It’s a not-overly sweet honey gelato, which packs some serious crunch, courtesy of the almonds, pistachios and hazelnuts that have been thrown into the mix.

Tiramisu

Good tiramisu is hard to find, so if you’re lazy to journey out to Lilyfield for the realest thing after the real thing, you can satisfy your craving pretty well here. It sees ladyfinger biscuits soaked in espresso coffee mixed into an egg, marsala and marscarpone gelato. Molto bene!

Banana Split

This flavour is bananas… like, Curious-George-is-about-to-arrive-and-steal-it-from-you levels of delicious. It’s a super banana and caramel gelato with chocolate chips, crushed peanuts and whipped cream.

Blood Orange

This is another all dairy free and vegan friendly sorbet you can choose from. It’s perfectly balanced; not too bitter and not too acidic. It’s even better to lick from a cone, on those fiery summer days that soon enough, we won’t be seeing many more of.

It’s also important to note that Gelato Messina has a board of rotating specials that are usually spectacular. Like the Pavlova flavour with chunks of meringue and a raspberry ripple through it. Phenomenal!
