Croque Monsieur...The Best Sandwich ever

The short answer is, “Yes.” Seriously.

At its simplest, the Croque Monsieur is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich that hailed from France, but worldwide has been the favourite of anyone who had half a palette and wanted a quick sammie to snack on after school. Even though this humble dish sees hot competition from their gourmet sandwich and burger counterparts, you have to admit that nothing beats a good throwback.

So just in case you don’t have a cheeky grill on hand to indulge in this crunchy treat, we’ve compiled a list of places to see how the pros do it.

The name Croque Monsieur is actually derived from the French verb croquer which means ‘to crunch’ or ‘to bite hungrily’. Brasserie Breads delivers this satisfying crunch by using their award winning organic sourdough bread. Between the slices, they mix crème fraiche and Dijon mustard into the gruyere cheese and ham for extra melty times.

The croquet monsieur here is served on inch-thick bread, and the cheese sauce seeps out its sides as you cut it open to feast. The bread is golden and features more melted cheese, boosted by fresh sprigs of garlic chive. Bonus: If you’re a keen coffee drinker, this open warehouse space is a hive of roasting activity. Nothing like coffee, cheese and ham to get you up in the morning, right?

Le Grand Café – Alliance Francaise - Sydney City

They bill themselves as a Parisian oasis in the heart of Sydney, so of course they can nail a good Croque Monsieur. Except these guys up the ante just a little by creating the lovechild of this classic dish if it got hot and heavy with its partner, the Croque Madame.

Here, they serve the leg ham sandwich with Dijon, Gruyere, a house made cheese sauce of thyme, pancetta, onion and cream, then top off the whole affair with an egg. Toasted to perfection in a sandwich press, the insides run just a little bit faster than you should be running there now.
